New technology is a great source of inspiration but all too often it is used solely for stage performers. So for this piece I challenged myself to create a gown sophisticated enough to be worn to a black tie event where a woman is noticed for her elegance when she walks in the room.
As a result I liked the idea of partnering the contrasting elements of high technology fabric with a classic silhouette. I created a Greek inspired column dress out of the fiber optic material and enhanced it with the illusion of lacing around the torso by using a metal corset (material which inhibits the emission of light at the waist, to make it quite flattering as well).
The woven illuminated cloth is backed with a complimentary colored 4 ply silk, and the battery packs are gently nestled in the hem. These details enable one to feel as though they are stepping into a proper evening gown rather than a costume.
In contrast, here’s a skeleton costume that I made for a client using El-Wire, brought to life with a hip-hop dancer, and a little light programming.
